Colonoscopy

Patients with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Insulin treated

  1. Patients to take HALF usual dose of insulin the day before the procedure
  2. A light low residue breakfast and lunch to be taken the day before the procedure.
  3. Following this lunch, clear fluids only to be taken. SOME OF THESE MAY NEED TO BE SUGARY TO AVOID HYPOGLYCAEMIA.
  4. Patient to omit morning dose of insulin on the day of the procedure.
  5. Clear fluids only may be taken.
  6. Record blood glucose levels.
  7. If on a twice daily insulin regimen, patient to take HALF usual dose of insulin with lunch, then continue with usual regimen.
  8. If patient on 4 times daily insulin regimen, then usual dose of insulin to be taken before lunch. If patient usually takes long acting insulin (Glargine/ Levemir) in the morning, take this pre lunch also
  9. Resume usual diet and fluids.
 

Patients with Type 2 Diabetes - Tablets

  1. If the patient takes 2 DIABETES TABLETS OR LESS, these should be omitted the day before the procedure. 
  2. If the patient takes MORE THAN 2 DIABETES TABLETS, the patient to take HALF the usual dose the day before the procedure.
  3. A light low residue breakfast and lunch to be taken the day before the procedure.
  4. Following this lunch, clear fluids only to be taken.
  5. SOME OF THESE FLUIDS MAY NEED TO BE SUGARY TO AVOID HYPOGLYCAEMIA.
  6.  Patient to omit tablets the morning of the procedure.
  7.  Clear fluids only to be taken.
  8.  Record blood glucose levels.
  9.  Following procedure, patients to take usual tablets with lunch.
  10. Resume usual diet and fluids.
