Barium Enema
- A morning appointment is preferred
- Patients with Diabetes should be first on the list
- Patients to omit iron tablets, bran or isogel for at least 5 days before the procedure
- Light diet to be taken 2 days prior to procedure
- Picolax to be taken 08:00 and 16:00 on the day before the procedure
- Breakfast may be taken on the moring before the procedure
- Clear fluids only to be taken following this breakfast and up until 2 hours before the procedure
- Some of these fluids may need to be sugary to avaoid hypoglycaemia
Patients withType 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Insulin Treated Diabetes
- Patients to take HALF usual dose of insulin the day before the procedure. This applies to all insulin regimens.
- Patients to omit insulin the morning of the preocedure

After the procedure if patient taking twice daily insulin then HALF morning dose of insulin to be taken before lunch.
- If patient on multiple daily injections then they should take their USUAL pre lunch dose of insulin post procedure. If their dose of long acting insulin (Glargine/Levemir) is taken in the morning, this should be taken pre lunch also.
- Patients should bring their insulin and food/sandwich in with them to take after the procedure
- Resume usual diet and fluids
Patients with Type 2 Diabetes - Tablets
- If the patient takes 2 DIABETES TABLETS PER DAY OR LESS, then these are to be omitted the day before the procedure even though they have eaten breakfast
- If the patient takes MORE THAN 2 DIABETES TABLETS PER DAY regardless of type then HALF the usual dose should be taken the day before the procedure.
- Diabetes tablets to be omitted the morning of the procedure
- Patients to bring tablets and food with them and take usual tablets following the procedure
- Patient to resume usual diet and fluids
Patients with Type 2 Diabetes - Tablets and Night time Insulin
- Patients to take HALF usual dose of long acting insulin on the 2 NIGHTS BEFORE the procedure
- HALF usual dose of tablets to be taken with breakfast the day before the procedure then no further Diabetes tablets until after the procedure
- Patient to omit tablet on the morning of the procedure
- Patients to bring tablets and food with them and resume usual Diabetes medication following the procedure
- Resume usual diet and fuids
