General principles of glycaemic control


New Diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes

Referral for Education.

Attention to lifestyle factors:
Attention to BP, Cholesterol and cardiovascular risk.

Attention to weight and use BMI as part of guide for initiation of therapy (see below)

Teach to self-monitor blood glucose ifappropriate (see later)

Book for repeat HbA1c at 3/12 and every 2-6/12 thereafter according to need
If Metformin is suggested in the algorithm and the patient does not tolerate more than one tablet consider slow release Metformin. This is often well tolerated in this group of patients. If still intolerant more to the next step as directed
BMI > 25.9 kg/m2 or BMI < 26 kg/m2 with signs of insulin resistance
