Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Morning List

  1. Patient to omit diabetes tablets.
  2. Record blood glucose levels.
  3. Following procedure patient to remain nil by mouth until fully conscious.
  4. Patient to take usual dose of diabetes tablets with a light meal.
  5. Resume usual diet and fluids.

Afternoon List

  1. Patients to take diabetes tablets with light breakfast.
  2. Record blood glucose levels.
  3. Omit any lunch time diabetes tablets.
  4. Following procedure patient to remain nil by mouth until fully conscious.
  5. Patient to take usual dose of diabetes tablets with a light meal.
  6. Resume usual diet and fluids.

Patients with Type 1 Diabetes/type 2 Diabetes on Insulin

Morning List

  • Patients with diabetes should be first on the list.
  • Patients to be nil by mouth from midnight.
  1. Patient to omit morning dose of quick-acting insulin (take Lantus/Levemir if normally taken in the morning).
  2. Record blood glucose levels.
  3. Following procedure, patient to remain nil by mouth until fully conscious.
  4. If patient is on a twice-daily regimen then HALF usual dose of insulin to be taken with lunch.
  5. If patient is on a four times daily insulin regimen, the usual dose of insulin to be taken before lunch.
  6. Resume usual diet and fluids

Afternoon List

  1. If patient is on a twice daily regimen, then HALF usual dose of insulin to be taken before breakfast.
  2. If patient is on four times daily insulin regimen, then usual dose of insulin to be taken before breakfast. Usual lunch time dose of insulin to be omitted.
  3. Record blood glucose levels.

  4. Following procedure, patient to remain nil by mouth until fully conscious.

  5. Usual dose of insulin to be taken with evening meal.
  6. Resume usual diet and fluids.
